The Doctors Keeping Up With Continuing Education

Dentistry is an ever changing profession.  It seems like every day new information is published on updated clinical techniques and procedures.  Additionally research is only getting stronger, correlating the relationship between dental health and overall systemic health.  Dr. Alter and Dr. Brown are aware of these ever changing trends in the field of dentistry.  For that reason they both partake in over 30 hours of continuing education programs over the course of the year.  Dentist's Keeping Up (DKU) is a program sponsored by The Dental Society of Delaware and Chester Counties, in conjunction with The Pennsylvania Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry.  Listed below are the upcoming, as well as some of the past courses that our doctors have completed.  These courses allow our doctors to deliver the best quality of care and most up to date information to our patients.

Last summer, Dr. Brown attended Dr. Chao's course for the Pinhole Surgical gum rejuvenation technique in California.  This is a minimally invasive procedure for correcting gum recession that involves NO Sutures, NO scalpels, and NO graft tissue donor sites which are associated with the significant post operative discomfort in traditional gum grafting techniques.  Dr. Brown and his patient population are excited about the amazing results we are seeing after this procedure.  Additionally only approximately 1300 dentists nationwide are qualified and trained in this technique, placing Dr. Brown in elite and rare company.

The hygienists attended a course on updating periodontal disease and it's correlation to systemic diseases such as heart disease. Also discussed was the changing healthcare system in this country. Statistics show people see their dentist and hygienist more frequently than their primary care physicians (PCP). This places dental professionals in a unique position to screen and refer patients to see their PCP. For this reason, tests are now being developed for DNA evaluating saliva to indicate potential for systemic diseases. The shift is toward a more complete health experience for the patient. Please help us help you by giving a complete medical history by discussing any dental or medical concerns-they may be linked!

Dr. Joshua Alter took part in "Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood" program at Beth El Congregation School. He told stories and read a book to the children on how to care for their teeth. Ellen Glassman, the education director quoted, "It was easy to see that not only is he a patient and caring dentist, but a natural kid-magnet!"
